This paper mill was already founded in Bavaria in 1887. Today Schongau mill is manufacturing annually up to 750.000 t newsprint and uncoated papers with high content of fillers (newspapers, prospects and catalogues) with three modern production lines and app. 600 employees. Already since 1962 each day 2000 tones of recycled paper are reused and the rate of DIP is almost 100 %.

Papierfabrik Rieger, located at Trostberg in Bavaria, Germany, manufactures with 180 employees and 2 paper machines 160.000 t of coated and uncoated white top testliner as well as white and grey paperboards from recovered paper with annual sales of app. 85 million Euros. At the same time, 175,000 tons of recovered paper is recycled. For manufacturing each ton of paper, 580 kWh of electricity and 6 cubic metres of water are required, while specific steam consumption is 1,8 tons Paper machine 2 is a four-ply Fourdrinier machine and was installed in 1992. Working width is 2,51 m, operating speed: 950 m/min, basis weights: 120-230 g/m², daily production capacity: 370 t. Special features of the machine include: headboxes equipped with circular distributors, four-ply sheet formation, unique pressing section, including a shoe press and transfer belt, designed for improved smoothness and a mark-free surface, Yankee cylinder with "Deutsche Presse", size press, calendar, on-line coater with three stations, including back-side coating,QLS, PLS, on-line measurement of chromaticity points, web inspection system, and automatic palette packing. Paperboard machine 1 is a nine-ply cylinder machine and was installed in 1925. Working width is 2,28 m, operating speed: 80 m/min, basis weights: 400-900 g/m², daily production capacity: ~ 75 t. Special features of the machine are: Yankee cylinder with "Deutsche Presse", on-line coater, calendar, on-line cutter, QLS and on-line measurement of chromaticity points, automatic palette packing, and Invo Tip.

In the year 1847 the history of the company Leinfelder began with a small paper mill in Schrobenhausen. In 1999, it came to the merger with Schwedt Papier & Karton to Leipa Leinfelder GmbH. In Schrobenhausen there is a paper machine with a trimmed width of 205 cm, and since 1973, also a carton board machine with a trimmed width of 360 cm. Both machines use exclusive recycled paper as raw material and the water loops are completely closed. Parallel to paper manufacturing, the company area FlexPack produces flexible packaging with two co-extruders, one extruder and over that different print and coating machines. There are 460 employees producing about 145,000 t of paper and cardboard every year, as well as about 240 million square meters of flexible packaging. The products range from machine gloss, calendered, coated paper, envelope paper, register carton, up to specialty papers. At the cardboard machine, grey and natron carton as well as duplex-and triplex carton is produced. The latest investments were a shoe press and modified wire section for the cardboard machine, as well as a new headbox for the paper machine.

The University of Applied Sciences, one of the biggest paper and packaging faculty in central Europe, educates paper engineers since 60 years. Since 2007, the faculty of paper technology offers a bachelor degree in 7 semesters. Since 2004 it is possible to continue after the bachelor in 1-2 years with the „Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Paper Technology“. All lectures are held only in English and therefore many foreign students take part. During the guided tour, you´ll get an overview about the possibilities to study and a tour around the modern laboratories.
